Richmond is a suburban area and town in the southwest part of London, located about 8 miles to the southeast end of Charing Cross. The town is close to the River Thames, with a large number of open spaces and park areas as well as Richmond Park. An Act of Parliament protects the scenic view of the River Thames on the side of Richmond. The area of Richmond was founded after Henry VII’s decision to build Richmond Palace during his reign in the 16th century, which led to the town being called that. The palace’s name came from his earldom of Richmond in North Yorkshire. During this era the palace and town were also closely associated with Queen Elizabeth I, who spent her final days there. During the 18th century the construction of Richmond Bridge was completed and many of the Georgian terraces were also built, such as those near Richmond Hill and Richmond Green. Those that remained were preserved a many of them are considered of heritage and architectural status. The opening of the railway in the area in 1846 meant a significant event into turning the town into a part of the rapidly growing and bustling London society. Richmond was once part of the ancient parish of Kingston upon Thames within the county or Surrey. Back in 1890 it became a municipal borough, which later came to include Ham, Kew, Petersham and some parts of Mortlake. The municipal borough became abolished back in 1965 and then Richmond became a part of the Greater London area.
