Ilford occupies an area in the north-east part of London. It is the administrative headquarters of the London Borough of Redbridge. The London Plan identifies Ilford as one of the major metropolitan centres in the London Plan. It is part of the IG2 and IG1 postcode districts. Initially a small rural settlement that was part of the county of Essex, Ilford greatly expanded after the introduction of the railway in 1839. In 1926 it became a municipal borough and has been part of Greater London since 1965. The town was first named Great Ilford, in order to differentiate it from Little Ilford, part of the London Borough of Newham. Currently the area is considered major retail and commercial centre with large areas of residential development that surround it. The area is known for the only complete mammoth skull unearthed in the UK. This happened in 1860, at the site of Boots the Chemist on present-day High Road. Said skull can be seen in the National History Museum. Thanks to the London 2012 Summer Olympics, Ilford was ranked fastest growing tourist destination in Europe in 2011. The town is well connected thanks to Ilford railway station and multiple busses that serve it.
