Elephant and Castle is a road junction in the centre of London. Elephant and Castle has been adopted as a name due to the proximity of a London Underground station of the same name. It covers part of SE1 and SE11 postcode districts. Elephant and Castle is most often referred to as ‘The Elephant’ by locals. The name of the area is derived from a coaching inn built there in 1816. The entire Elephant and Castle area suffered huge damage during World War II, as it became a target for German air raids on 10 May 1941. The reconstruction plan featured rebuilding of the properties destroyed during the bombings. One example of this is the London College of Communication, which is a renowned institution, built here in the early 1960s. A local landmark, which was emblematic of the post-war needs was the Heygate Estate, which was home to more than 3000 people. This building, however, is to be demolished as part of a plan for redevelopment of the entire Elephant and Castle area.
