Edgware is one of the northern areas of London. Since 2008, Edgeware has been designated for preferred development. The postcode districts covered by the area are HA8 and NW7. The area is considered mainly residential and shopping-oriented. It is also the location of a northern terminus of the Northern line. Two streams run across its territory, namely the Deans Brook and Edgware Brook, both of which merge into the Silk Stream. Edgware was a parish in the county of Middlesex and was part of the Hendon Rural District until its abolishment in 1931. Later it became part of the Municipal Borough of Hendon till 1965, when it officially became part of the city of London. No major rises in population could be seen in Edgware till the 20th century. With the opening of the tube station in 1924, however, this quickly changed. The population increased exponentially by 1961, with a notable increase in Jewish community. There are 3 tube stations in the area: Canons Park tube station, Burnt Oak tube station and Edgware station, all of which serve different lines.
